While the St. Louis metro area continues to see deaths outnumber births, the region still experienced population growth last year, thanks to one significant factor: international migration. According to population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, the metro area’s population grew by 6,420 people from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, bringing the total population to 2,811,927. This represents a 0.23% increase over the previous year, allowing St. Louis to maintain its ranking as the 23rd largest metro area in the United States.
A key driver of this population growth was the addition of 12,375 people through net international migration — individuals who moved to St. Louis from other countries. This influx of international migrants helped offset the losses the region experienced from domestic migration, with 3,759 people leaving the area for other parts of the country. Additionally, the region saw a negative natural growth, with deaths exceeding births by 2,209. Despite these challenges, the region’s ability to attract international migrants played a critical role in sustaining its population growth and economic vitality.
