The World Affairs Council of St. Louis proudly congratulates Fort Zumwalt West High School for their impressive 9th-place finish at the Academic WorldQuest National Competition, held in Washington, D.C. earlier this month. Representing the St. Louis region after winning the local competition, the team competed among 33 elite schools from across the nation.

Beyond the competition, the trip was filled with unforgettable educational and cultural experiences. Led by their teacher and advisor, the students had the opportunity to explore the capital, engage with global leaders, and deepen their understanding of international affairs and civic engagement.

Highlights of their Washington, D.C. experience included:

Meeting with Dr. Bob Onder, Missouri’s Congressional Representative. The students expressed interest in becoming involved in political campaigns—an exciting sign of their growing civic engagement.

A visit to the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, where students asked thoughtful questions during a session focused on energy policy. The speaker encouraged further dialogue, even offering to stay in touch via email.

An audience with Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma of Mexico, who fielded questions from the students and inspired future international interest.

A nighttime tour of D.C.’s monuments, made possible by a personalized taxi tour—an impactful experience that brought American history to life.

Conversations with the President of the World Affairs Councils of America, sparking interest in internship opportunities and global careers.

Peer exchanges, including formal and informal conversations with students from around the country, such as the Houston team during a pizza dinner on Sunday night.

Navigating tight travel logistics, including a near-miss at the airport and a last-minute fast-food stop after a flight delay—memories the students will laugh about for years to come.

Late-night scooter adventures, where a few students explored the Capitol area under the lights of a quiet D.C., creating moments of joy and freedom during a packed weekend.

“The Academic WorldQuest weekend is so much more than a competition,” said their teacher. “It’s an eye-opening experience that gives students a direct connection to global affairs and national politics. They return home inspired, informed, and ready to make a difference.”

The World Affairs Council of St. Louis is honored to support the next generation of global citizens and proud to send such an outstanding team to the nation’s capital.
